All,
I was recently sent a document through our company security department which was a report on Cypriot Reunification. On further investigation it turns out its in the public domain and free of copyright so therefore open to all.
I thought some of you may be interested..... as it makes quite interesting reading.....
The link is http://www.crisisgroup.org/home/index.cfm
And the report is entitled. Cyprus: Reversing the Drift to Partition, writteh 10 January 2008
Cheers for now

| Actually this group have published some very objective and factual reports on the situation here and this one is a very good example:Both myself and and a number of other Greek-Cypriot people have long realised the tremendous potential advantages of having direct access to the enormous market in Turkey with its massive population and demand for goods and services etc. not to mention the additional benefits for tourism from being by able to run tours and cruises to and from our nearest neighbour which has not been possible since 1974.Getting rid of this anachronistic problem here will be both a relief and a blessing for everyone involved.......but to do that it will take some real statesmanship and vision from all the leaders and the first crucial step will be next months elections here.At least the fact that two of the major candidates realise the urgency of the need for a solution and are prepared to work for that end is encouraging as they represent the majority of the electorate. All we can do is hope the Greek-Cypriots chose one of them and wish them the best of luck. |

Interesting to read. If only, there was some political will to do this. Whether the elections will result in a new president with a will to change things remains to be seen. I was enthusiastic about the chances of the Annan Plan prior to the last elections and saw how things changed with the new administration. One thing's sure, some form of reunification is desirable for the future of the island, but above all I think that the stability and absence of any conflict here is paramount.

cymart and Dee,
From recent history elsewhere in the world it often takes two people on opposite sides who are brave enough and forsighted enough to forget the past and look to the future and sit down and compromise - FW De Klerk and Nelson Mandella in South Africa, Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness in Northen Ireland and perhaps this year or next Korea.
It often helps as it did in Norhern Ireland and now Korea that more powerful countries provide active encouragement and show the way to peace, reconciliation and understanding.
Whether there is anybody on either side in Cyprus at the moment I don't know but one day there will be. |

Stuart,
I think that could be overly simplistic, while I don't agree with everything in the document, crisis group are usually soild in what they produce and everything we've had from them today seems to be well reseached, certainly academically.
The reason behind the post wasn't really to open a discussion on the report merely to provide the link if anyone was interested.....
My only complaint was I think it was slightly long winded... Once past the executive summary I kind of drifted off.....
Cheers for now
